Biodegradable Tableware

This tableware set from Real Goods has a lot going for it. It’s biodegradable, and mulches in as little as four months. It’s made from renewable bamboo, straw and rice hull fibers, and is colored with rice or coconut. They’re also petroleum and plastic free. The thing I love the best about them though, is that they look beautiful. They’re nice and simple, and they have the size and shape of tableware that fits perfectly. I didn’t realize biodegradable tableware even existed a few days ago – now this set is at the top of my wish list!

Are they durable? They will mulch in 4 months – that’s after they are put in the compost or [living] soil, right? Or will they be falling apart after 1 month’s worth of wet food?

According to the manufacturer, they’ll last for up to five years. I probably wouldn’t leave them soaking in the sink or in a wet dishwasher, and I don’t think that they’ll get soggy from normal day-to-day use.
